Cala Blanca Resort Guide

Cala Blanca is a purpose built resort located on the west coast of the island just 3 miles south of Ciutadella.

There resort was built in 1990 and there are now several hotels however the resort consists of mainly private white washed villas. There is a mini-train service that stops at numerous points on the resort.

Cala Blanca offers a pedestrianised shopping area with a good range of shops, a mini market that offers UK branded items ad numerous souvenir and gift shops. There is also a chemist as well as numerous cash machines.

There are several bars and restaurants in Cala Blanca that overlook the sea that include evening entertainment, however there is a much wider choice just a short walk from the seafront.

Cala Blanca Beach

Cala Blanca is a small beach situated on the west side of the island, the white sandy beach is lined towards the rear with aromatic pine trees . A rocky inlet with calm clear waters makes for snorkelling conditions. The beach also benefits from beachside bars and restaurants and a children’s water chute.

Son Catlar (Prehistoric Site)

Distance: 3.2 km

Location: Sant Joan de Missa road, 8km South of Ciutadella

Son Catlaris a prehistoric town built in the talayotic period between 100BC and 300BC. It has a spectacular defence wall stretching 900m and contains 6 turrets and a bastion. Within the wall there are 5 talayots and the remains of Taula as well as other buildings.

Castillo Menorca

Location: Ciutadella

Situated just 7km from Ciutadella Castillo Menorca is a shopping and entertainment park for all the family. There are numerous shops selling island souvenir’s including the islands biggest LLADRO showroom as well as numerous activities for children including: large grassed gardens, trampolines, mini golf, sand pits, climbing wall, swimming pools and water chutes.

Municipal Museum of Ciutadella

Built in 1677 the Municipal Museum of Ciutadella shows of Menorca’s ancient history containing numerous artefacts from the Talayotic, Muslim and Romans periods on the island. Items include including pottery, jewellery, weapons and utilities.

Menorca Cathedral

Location: Ciutadella

The cathedral Basilica of Menorca located in Ciutadella is well worth a visit. Built in 1362 on the orders of King Alfonso III of Aragon after the conquest of Menorca in 1287. The church has a single nave, which leads to a semicircle design. On either side there are 3 chapels, six in total all referring to various historical events.

Located in Ciutadella in a former convent the Diocese museum contains Talayotic and other early archaeological finds. There is also a fine collection of painting from local artist Pere Daura and a miniature model village made by one of the priests.

Defence Tower

Menorca has numerous defence towers, the first few we’re built during the late 16th century to prevent invasions form pirates and the Turkish, these include Castell San Nicholas built in 1690 in Ciutadella and to two further towers at Punta Prima and Alcufar. Then later during 1798-1809 the British built a further 12 to protect its shores from further attacks.

Held in Mao and Ciutadella trotting races are a popular sport in Menorca and have been for over 200 years. The races occur on Saturday night during the summer and Sunday mornings during the winter.

AquaRock Water Park

Smaller than the Aqua Rock water park but still good for younger children. Attractions include trampolines, arcade machines, kiddie rides, 3 x swimming pools, water slides, wave machines and a Jacuzzi. Entry price is 17 euros for adults and 11 euros for under 11’s. There is also a restaurant offering lunchtime meals and drinks.

The Aqua Park at Cala en Blanes is well worth a visit. With over 12.500 metres of numerous wet water rides such the Back Hole, Adventure River, Giant Slides, Water Tunnels, Childrens water Shuttes, Kamikaze etc. An onsite restaurant offers a good range of snacks and meals at the onsite restaurants. Ticket prices for over 11 years old 17 Euros, 3-11 10 euros and unders 3’s go for free.

Naveta Des Tudons (Prehistoric Site)

Distance: 9.2 km

Location: 4 km East of Ciutadella, Menorca

Built approximately 3000 years ago the Naveta is a type of funeral monument. Built without mortar the construction is made up of large stones and takes the form of an upturned ship where the name naveta comes from meaning ship. Jewellery, pots, ceramic urns, weapons have been found along with the remains of human bodies.

Torretrencada (Prehistoric Site)

Distance: 12.2 km

Location: 7 km of Ciutadella on the mao road

The prehistoric town of Torretrencada consists of an alomost hidden taula,a talayot, a cave and the remains of dwelling houses are very visable.

Necropolis Caves

Distance: 12.8 km

Location: Cala Morell, Ciutadella

Known as the Necropolis meaning “city of the dead”, the Cala Morell caves consists of 14 man made caves. The caves date back to the pretalayótic period until the IIC AD times and were used as a burial ground. The tombs themselves are a marvel of craftsmanship that contain internal pillars, decorated doorways and raised platforms vied for our attention with drainage systems, water storage features and sockets for carpentry.
