Castillo Menorca

Situated just 7km from Ciutadella Castillo Menorca is a shopping and entertainment park for all the family. There are numerous shops selling island souvenir’s including the islands biggest LLADRO showroom as well as numerous activities for children including: large grassed gardens, trampolines, mini golf, sand pits, climbing wall, swimming pools and water chutes.

AquaRock Water Park

Smaller than the Aqua Rock water park but still good for younger children. Attractions include trampolines, arcade machines, kiddie rides, 3 x swimming pools, water slides, wave machines and a Jacuzzi. Entry price is 17 euros for adults and 11 euros for under 11’s. There is also a restaurant offering lunchtime meals and drinks.

Glass Bottom Boat Trips

Take a glass bottomed boat trip around maos harbour. The cruises are relaxing and educational explaining the port’s historical importance as well as highlighting numerous buildings of interest, including Kings Island, The Fortress of La Mola and many other interesting points. Well worth a trip.

Municipal Museum of Ciutadella

Built in 1677 the Municipal Museum of Ciutadella shows of Menorca’s ancient history containing numerous artefacts from the Talayotic, Muslim and Romans periods on the island. Items include including pottery, jewellery, weapons and utilities.

Museum of Menorca

Menorca’s history is uncovered in its largest museum; predominately covering menorca’s archaeological past. The museum it self is located in a wonderful 17th century Baroque building used as an old Franciscan monastery. Highlight collections include old coins, pottery dating back to the pretalayótic period. There is also a wonderful collection of paintings and engravinsg from the XVIII and XIX centuries. Opens Tuesday to Saturday and Sunday for limited hours.

Menorca Diocese Museum

Located in Ciutadella in a former convent the Diocese museum contains Talayotic and other early archaeological finds. There is also a fine collection of painting from local artist Pere Daura and a miniature model village made by one of the priests.

Military Museum

Situated in Es Castell, the Military museum of Menorca is located in 18th century barracks of Cala Corp. The museum has a fantastic collection of the islands military history. Spread over two floors and numerous rooms the museum also has a collection of canons and guns.

Menorca Nature Museum

This museum displays the importance of Menorca’s natural and cultural resources. It is located at the heart of the island on a biosphere reserve in Ferreries.

Collection of Joan Hernandez Mora

Joan was a local historian and donated his life’s finding to the city of Mao when he died in 1975. His collection contains antique furniture, books, painting and maps dating back between the 18th and 19th century when the island was ruled by the British.

Es Moli de Dalt

This small museum is built within a flour grinding mill that dates back to 1762 when the French ruled Menorca. The museum contains agricultural tools and machinery that was once used to work the land including ploughs, cheese press, black smiths tools, bread kneading machine and an old farmers cart.

Port of Mao

Mao port is the second deepest natural water harbour in the world and approximately 5km in length, it’s a wonderful and interesting place to visit. The Marina and port area are just a short walk from Mao’s city centre and is approximately a 2 mile stretch of numerous boutiques, galleries, a casino, bars and restaurants. Along this stretch there is off course numerous fishing boats, yachts and speedboats anchored at the shoreline.

Ciutadella

Visit Menorca’s oldest capital Ciutadella and see its 17th century Italian styled buildings. On a good clear day you’ll also see the mountains of Majorca. The old town has many interesting historic and religious buildings that can be found by wondering its maze of cobbled streets.

Fort Marlborough

Built by the English between 1710 and 1726 Fort Marborough is located on the southern side of mahon port in Es Castell. The fort is named after Sir John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, and a highly regarded General in the British army at the time.

Menorca Cathedral

The cathedral Basilica of Menorca located in Ciutadella is well worth a visit. Built in 1362 on the orders of King Alfonso III of Aragon after the conquest of Menorca in 1287. The church has a single nave, which leads to a semicircle design. On either side there are 3 chapels, six in total all referring to various historical events.

Monte Toro

The highest mountain in Menorca is Mount Toro at 354m high. Not only do you get breath taking views of Menorca but the Franciscan nuns who occupy a convent at the top open their doors to the public from May, where to be seen the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu del Toro. The site is an important place of pilgrimage with the statue of the Virgin towering high on the peak.

Necropolis Caves

Known as the Necropolis meaning “city of the dead”, the Cala Morell caves consists of 14 man made caves. The caves date back to the pretalayótic period until the IIC AD times and were used as a burial ground. The tombs themselves are a marvel of craftsmanship that contain internal pillars, decorated doorways and raised platforms vied for our attention with drainage systems, water storage features and sockets for carpentry.

Fortress of Isabel II, La Mola

Built between 1850 and 1875 and situated on the peninsula of La Mola at the entrance of Mao harbour. The fortress was built by the Spanish for the British in order to help defend operations against the French. http://www.fortalesalamola.com

Naveta Des Tudons (Prehistoric Site)

Location: 4 km East of Ciutadella, Menorca

Built approximately 3000 years ago the Naveta is a type of funeral monument. Built without mortar the construction is made up of large stones and takes the form of an upturned ship where the name naveta comes from meaning ship. Jewellery, pots, ceramic urns, weapons have been found along with the remains of human bodies.

Son Catlar (Prehistoric Site)

Location: Sant Joan de Missa road, 8km South of Ciutadella

Son Catlaris a prehistoric town built in the talayotic period between 100BC and 300BC. It has a spectacular defence wall stretching 900m and contains 6 turrets and a bastion. Within the wall there are 5 talayots and the remains of Taula as well as other buildings.

Trepucó (Prehistoric Site)

Location: Es Castell to Sant Lluis road

Trepucó is a talayotic settlement situated southwest of Es Castell, on the road to Sant Lluis, Trepucó contains the largest and best-preserved taula in the Balearics. It includes stone buildings and defence towers.

Talati de Dalt (Prehistoric Site)

4km west of Mao on the main road to Alaior

Talati de dalt is the most popular settlement on the island it contains an unusual elliptical-base conical talayot, a large leaning taula, and several dwellings as well as well preserved defensive wall.

Torralba d’en Salord (Prehistoric Site)

Location: Alaior to Cala en porter road

This settlement has an impressive standing taula reaching to 5 metres in height as well as two outstanding talayots, caves and building remains. Relics from this settlement can be found in the Museum of Menorca.

Torretrencada (Prehistoric Site)

Location: 7 km of Ciutadella on the mao road

The prehistoric town of Torretrencada consists of an alomost hidden taula,a talayot, a cave and the remains of dwelling houses are very visable.

Torre d’en Galmes (Prehistoric Site)

Torre d’en Galmes is the largest talayotic settled in Menorca that’s dates back to 1400 BC. The site contains well-preserved buildings as well as three talayots and a good-sized taula. A notable artefact found at this site was a small fine figure of imhotep an Eygptian polymath.

Roman Basilicas

Location: Son Bou and Fornas de Torello (Sant Climent)

Basilicas are a type of Roman building that was built between 300 and 400 AD. These religious buildings were used for public gatherings similar to a public hall. There are two notable examples of these Christian Basilicas left behind by the Romans in Menorca. They are located at Son Bou, Fornas de Torello (sant that are both very interesting and well worth a visit.

Defence Tower

Location: Ciutadella, Punta Prima and Alcufar

Menorca has numerous defence towers, the first few we’re built during the late 16th century to prevent invasions form pirates and the Turkish, these include Castell San Nicholas built in 1690 in Ciutadella and to two further towers at Punta Prima and Alcufar. Then later during 1798-1809 the British built a further 12 to protect its shores from further attacks.

Santa Águeda Castle

The castle of Santa Agueda is located on Menorca’s third highest point at 264m above sea level. Built by the Arabs as a safehold from danger in approximately 1232 it was the last standpoint before later being destroyed by King Peter IV of Aragon. The walk to the castle ruins and outer wall takes 45minutes via a roman road from Ferreries. Good views at the top of Menorca’s northern coastine.

Gin Distillery in Mahon

Visit the Gin distillery located at Mahon’s harbour, the famous Menorca gin dates back to the 18th century when it was under British control and taste the distinctively aromatic flavours of the Xoriguer Gin amongst other local liqueurs. Open daily.

Menorca Cheese Museum

The Menorca cheese factory is located 1km from Ferreries. The museum offers tours on how the cheese is made and you can have a free taste of the numerous cheeses that are made there.

Cova d'en Xoroi

Cova d’en Xoroi used to be a prehistoric dwelling but has been made into a bar and restaurant that is perched high on the side of a steep cliff with some stunning views. The venue becomes a nightclub in the evenings. Entry fee 7 euros.

Horse back riding

The Menorca terrain is ideal for horse riding so why not spend the day at the Can Pouny equestrian riding school. Situated on the main Mahon to Alaior road at L’Argentina. There are varying classes ranging from a 30mins countryside walk to 3 hour treks through the beautiful Menorca countryside.

Son Parc Golf Club

Son Parc is situated on the north side of Menorca and is the home of Menorca’s only golf course. The golf course is now an 18-hole course with some wonderful surrounding scenery. Facilities include clubhouse restaurant, driving range, putting green, tennis courts, hire of golf clubs and carts. Green fees for 18 holes range from 45-60Euro’s from 30 April to 1 May.

Trotting Races

Held in Mao and Ciutadella trotting races are a popular sport in Menorca and have been for over 200 years. The races occur on Saturday night during the summer and Sunday mornings during the winter.

Menorca Cricket Club

Founded in 1985 by a group of British ex-pats the Menorca cricket club is situated in BiniParrell, 1km from S’Uestra on the road to Llucmassanes. The club welcomes tourists to visit and watch their fixtures between March and October. Clubhouse offers drinks and snacks.

S'Albufera d'Es Grau Nature Reserve

Sand dunes, wetlands and scrubland make up Menorca’s beautiful nature reserve. The reserve stretches 8km north along the coast from Cap de Favaritx and contains over 100 species of birds and animals living in their nature habitat.
