Driving a car in Menorca
There is no better way to explore this small island than by car. You will be able to travel the entire island and explore a wide variety of natural and historic attractions found in remote spots.

Driving is easy and straightforward in Menorca, there is one main single carriageway road running across the middle of the island from east-to-west, called the Me-1. The Me-1 connects Mahon, the capital in the east, to Ciutadella in the west bypassing the island inland towns of Alaior, Ferreries and Es Mercadal.
Secondary roads branch off the Me-1, like the me-2 and other me roads connecting coastal villages and smaller towns. You will also notice the term Carretera this also refers to a secondary road.
The third tier of roads are called Cami, meaning path. These roads are generally narrow winding rural roads or paths, often with dry stones walls. These roads are great for exploring the island but drive carefully as they are often shared with walkers, cyclists, horse riders or livestock and can become unpaved.
The following are some of the main legal requirements for driving in Menorca. If you are caught not following these rules you may be fined and police may issue fines on the spot.
- Speed limits: Generally, 50km. 90km on main roads
- Seatbelts are compulsory for those in the front and rear.
- Children must be in appropriate seats for children.
- Alcohol limit – 0.5 milligrams of alcohol per milliliter of blood allowed, UK is 0.8
- V-16 emergency breakdown beacon – As of 1st January 2026, this flashing amber light replaces the red triangle to indicate you are broken down.

Catching a bus in Menorca
The central bus station in Menorca is in Mahon just of Calle de Vassallo near the Placa de Explanada.
The main bus operator is TMSA (Transportes Menorca S.A.) runs bus services from Mahon to Ciutadella, Binibeca, Cala Galdana, Cala’n Porter, Canutells, Es Castell, Es Migjorn Gran, Salgar, Santo Tomas, Sant Lluis, Sant Climent, Son Bou, Punta Prima. Another bus operator Torres Alles Autocares operates a circular route around Mahon from the bus station and the third bus operator based in Fornells runs services in the northeast, between Fornells, Mahon, Es Mercadal, Arenal d’en Castell, Son Parc, Cala Tirant and Es Grau.
